My sister was wounded in Iraq and recieved the purple heart. She is now trying to start her schooling, and has found a great college. She found out that her purple heart benefits are for her children only, and her GI bill is only for state supported school (the school she wants to go to is private). She cannot leave the area b/c she is not done with treatment, and there are no other programs in the local schools. She does not qualify for federal aid. Is there anything else she can do? She cannot afford a private loan, as she has no income during her recovery period.

She did fill out the FASFA. That's how she found out she isn't eligible. She also called two VAs and the governor's office, and they all told her that she couldn't use her GI bill for a private school. It's ridiculous how the government is treating those who fight for our freedom.

1.Which unit division did she serve in. Many units have associations that hand out scholarships for veterans of the unit and their kids if she joins. Think VFW smaller scale.
2. The GI Bill can be used any accredited school. Does not matter if it is public or private. Have her contact the VA or their rep at the school she wants to go to.
3. When she starts school what she did in the military will turn into some college credits. When she gets talks to the VA rep she will fill out another form for those. Before I started I got 15 credits for 4 years in the Army.

Did she check with that schools financial aid office in regards to the GI bill? Have her still fill out the FAFSA and contact the school financial aid department for help.
You might also want to check www.fastweb.com for scholarships etc. You can also go to the library and check for grants.
