I'm visiting some friends in San Diego in 2 weeks with my roommate; but we were planning on spending two days in LA as well beforehand. I haven't been there since I was a kid, but my roomate and I are both single in our 20's and we're looking for a hotel near bars, clubs etc... and not in any bad areas. Anybody know of a good hotel that we could stay at for just one night? I have no clue what I'm doing or where to look.

The Standard
8300 W. Sunset Blvd.
West Hollywood, CA 90069

A trendsetter that's also one of the better deals in town
Swimming pool
Massage

This is a former retirement home on Sunset Strip turned into affordable and playful high-tech hotel for the hip that's anything but standard. From late in the week to over the weekend, there's a DJ at the front desk playing lots of technopop music for the hipsters hanging out on the low-slung sofas in the lobby-lounge. Blue Astroturf surrounds the pool. The 140 guest rooms and two suites were designed by art director Shawn Hausman (The People vs. Larry Flint), and the décor is best described as progressive, with such artsy touches as Andy Warhol print curtains. Amenities include T-1 internet connection, cordless phones and speaker phones, plus minibars stocked with the usual bottled drinks plus such

I would either pick a hotel in Santa Monica ( Viceroy, Huntley, or Holiday Inn if you're on a budget). That way you can party over on the 3rd Street Promenade, and hang at the beach if the weather is good.
Or in Hollywood near Sunset and Hollywood Blvd ( Hollywood Roosevelt, Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, Standard) There are a TON of bars/clubs on Sunset.
On Travelzoo, they have a really good deal for The Luxe, but I'm not sure how it is from the partying. You could call them and ask. It's a reaaally good deal for the area.

Stay at a hotel in the Sunset Strip. That way you can walk to all the clubs, bars & lounges and won't risk a DUI.
Depending on your budget, I'd recommend:

Low budget: Best Western Sunset Plaza, The Grafton
Mid Budget: Standard, Hyatt
Big Budget: Sunset Tower Hotel, Mondrian

Hyatt & Mondrian are renovating.

I agree with Libby.....The Standard are awesome hotels, but check out the downtown one instead (South Flower & 6th St.).

It's much more upperclass and full of models and producers, actresses/actors ect.

The rooftop bar is just to die for! And its something the Sunset Standard doesn't have.

The crowd is mainly ages between 23-35 and very trendy, fashionable and fun.
