The Bible says that sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4). God hates sin, and does not want it in heaven with Him. There are no different levels of sin, a "white lie" is the same to God as murdering someone (1 Timothy 1:10, Revelation 21:8, 22:15). Sin is sin, and God will root it out when Judgement Day comes.

All sin is equal, but sin in the Old Testament had varying degrees of punishment or sacrifice, some required death right then and there, some required the death of an animal or some other offering. That being said, the ultimate effect of sin brings about the same punishment for all, Romans 6:23. Those who truly follow Christ and accept the blood of His sacrifice and continually repent of their sins are not subject to that punishment.
There is, however, as often happens in the Bible, a caveat. John says that there is a "sin unto death". I do no know what that is, exactly. Yeshua says there is an "unpardonable" sin, again I do not know exactly what that is. I would assume the sin that John is speaking of and the one that Yeshua is speaking of is the same one. But evidently there is a sin that we cannot repent of. I assume that this sin that is so deadly is somehow turning your back on the truth and going back to your former way of life. Read Hebrews 6:4-8.

Sin is what happen when you make a moral mistake. Obviously one can make tiny mistake and will all the time. It is the big mistake that are the most damaging. Any reasonable religion, will believe that there are all degrees of sin. But, some rely to heavily on information gotten from ancient times, when there was little science or technology, when reason was not always used very well.

A sin is a sins is a sin no matter what.
Proverbs 6:16-19
These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among the brethren.

From a human perspective, there are certainly categories of sin. Most of us would agree, I think, that disobeying your parents is not quite so bad as, say, mass murder. Scripture doesn't support that position. In Paul's "laundry list" of sins, they're all treated as identical. Sin is rebellion against God. That's pretty much a binary state - either you rebel or you don't.

Sins do have varying degrees of intensity evidently, because God suggests the punishment should not exceed the crime when He offers "an eye for an eye". The only issue in which all sin is equal is the fact that any sin in one's life, large or small, will result in eternity in hell for that person, IF they have not trusted Jesus as their Savior..

To men, some sins are far worse than others. With God, a sin is a sin, and must be paid for. Fortunately for us, God provided payment for our sin.

We'll, since murder is a sin, but you can repent at the last minute (like Jeffrey Dahmer) and still go to heaven, yet not believing in God condemns you to Hell then I guess murder isn't nearly the sin that lack of faith is.
Messed up isn't it?

All sin is equal. The punishment for all sins is death. Thankfully, Jesus paid the price already!
