I gave my friends a kitty and hes been nothing but trouble. He keeps scratching their kids, and their furniture and shoes. After her tore up one of their shoes, they decided to declaw him. I dont want them to. I think their going to neuter him soon, if they havnt already. And I think he would probly calm down after that. Any how, Iam trying to convince them not to DECLAW him. I think its cruel. Ive heard about those little thing you pur on there nails. And I was wandering what there called? How much they cost? Where can you get them? Will the place you buy them put them on you cats nails? Or do you have to do it your self or take them to the vet? Oh and how long do they last until you have to put them on it again? Thanks so much! Please dont give dumb answers! Thanks!

They are called "Soft Paws". It depends where you get them. They usually cost from $8-15. (Depends on the size. For a kitten, maybe $5-10.) You can get them at almost any pet store, including Petco and PetSmart. No, the people don't put it one the cats nails for you. You have to do it, or talk your Vet into doing it. But it really isn't that hard! They generally last 2-4 months, depends on the cats daily routine. (Like scratching and all). Thank you for taking care of the kitten!!!

PS. I had these caps, and they really work!!!

PPS. Which kitten did you give away? What is the name of it? Sneakers? Or which one? (No, don't worry, I am not a spy or anything!!! lol. I just want to know.)

Here is additional info on SoftPaws. http://www.softpaws.com/

Good Luck!!! And I hope you save your Kitten!!!

You don't say how old the kitty is, but it sounds like he's not happy. If he's just a little kitten, then he's just BEING a kitten, and they're always mischevious, and getting into things. Neutering him will calm him down SOME, but they need to get him a scratching post, or a heavy plank to lay on the floor, and show him that he's to use either of these ONLY. Also, if they keep a squirt bottle of water handy, and spray him when he misbehaves, he'll learn. I don't believe in declawing, either. I feel that my furniture isn't as important as the cat's paws/first knuckles!! Some people put "Soft Paws" nail caps on their cat's feet, instead of declawing. If you'll notice, they have an ad for Soft Paws on this site. Check them out, and see if they'll tell you the cost and frequency. Good luck.

Oh, you mean the cat caps? Yeah you can find those at petsmart or petco. They cost between 15-20 dollars, but they have about 30-40 nail caps and they last about 3 months for each use so it's relatively cheap. You put them on yourself. I suggest doing it when they are asleep, but I've heard that some people have their vets do it for them. Declawing is horrible, it requires cutting a piece of their little fingers off...=( Hope my information was helpful.

Let them know that declawing is very painful and inhumane. Only clip the tips of cats nails. Neutering him is an awesome idea, he will become more settled. Catnip toys and such draw the cats attentions away from kids, they love that stuff! Yes, they do have caps for nails as well. You may want to call a vet to find out where to get them. But I think just slight clipping like we do with babies would be a safe bet. Declawing is similar to 'cutting,' off not only our nails but our fingers as well. It is awful for cats. I love cats! I have three. I wish you all the luck with this. PS Hey, if they treat him badly, sneak him out in your purse and bring him home! (Smiles) Peace & Love, Bella

I had a kitty who I only had neutered and thought that would help with all the scratching. Actually he got worse if you could believe it. Some kitties are just not meant to have claws because they can't control them. I agree with you when you say that declawing is cruel, but I eventually did it and he is the sweetest kitty ever! As for the false nails, that all depends on the kitty and if they'll tolorate it or not, mine didn't. Declawing was the only answer for me. Good Luck and don't be too upset if they decide to have it done. Kitty won't be mad forever.

I'm not sure if this is a "dumb answer" but I think the best thing to do is to do all it takes to get him to stop scratching people. Maby you should sort of punish him whenever he scratches someone. Like ma by you could put him in a chair where he cant get down for a while.

So the plastic peices that you put on the claws are worse for the cats. For cats getting them declawed is really just like a nother surgery, and while they have to get used to it, as long as they are indoor cats they wont have a problem. If she lets the cat outside definately dont get it declawed.
You can get the vet to put the plastic peices ont he claws (its more expensive though). Basically you take a nail glue, and put the pieces ont he cats claws and they come in all sorts of colors. they can bite them off and eat them so you need to watch them. They typically last a couple weeks and then you need to change them
Kitten go through stages, they need to get awater bottle, and if the cat doesnt like kids messing with it then they need to teach their kids not to do it.

Ummm...declawing isn't all bad....you can do it to just the front paws. Or are the kids pestering with the kitten. A cat phycologist in New York said that cats attract to those who do not like it because they leave it alone and let it be. That lets the cat get use to the stranger. Maybe the kitten doesn't like children because of a bad experience.

Declawing is illegal in the UK - it's considered mutilation.
Why not buy them a scratch post and trim kitty's claws ?
I have 13 cats and leather furniture, it works for me.
