The only PS3's that are backward compatible is the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB PS3. The 60GB PS3 is the most backward compatible and can play almost every PS1 and PS2 game ever released, but the 80GB PS3 can't play as many PS1 and PS2 games.

The 40GB PS3 isn't backward compatible at all, that's one reason why it's a lot cheaper because it's not backward compatible. If your thinking about buying a PS3, I recommend the 60GB version first, and then the 80GB PS3. But if you have a PS2 and you don't want to spend $500 for the 60GB or 80GB PS3, then get the 40GB PS3.

Only the 20, 60, and 80 gb versions. The 20 & 60 gb has the emotion engine, which was used on the PS2, so those versions can play almost all PS2 games. The 80 gb version uses software emulation so there are some games that aren't currently playable on the PS3 until someone writes the software emulation for that game.

The 40 gb version will not play PS2 games whatsoever, but it can play PSX games.

The 40 gb is not the most compatible version out there. It is the least compatible version out there. The 20 and 80 are the most compatible because of the emotion engine.

PS3's are backward compatable. The 40GB right now is the most compatable( Don't know why), but I have an 80GB and it works fine with all my ps2 games.

Yes, the 20,60, and 80gb versions, but the 40gb version is not.
