We have a 1970's brick home that has white, brown, red & black spots in it. I like it & from the road it just looks tan to me but my husband thinks its ugly & wants to paint it. I dont think that we should paint it...Has anybody ever painted brick before? What do yall think that we should do? Thanks so much! :)

I own construction/remodeling company and from my experiance I would say "don't do it". After you do it might look ok but it will start coming off and you will have to have it repainted. Especially it you paint it much different color for example if ou have dark brick and paint it lighter color as soon as some of the paint start coming it will be visable. Also in many situations when selling house new people have problem with painted brick.

I hope that helps . Good luck

Painted Brick can look okay... but I personally think that brick itself has so much great character and such a nice look that I'd rather try to clean it first.
If your brick has spots/stains in it, you should ask around to find out if there are services that will clean the brick of discoloration rather than painting right away. It would probably be more money to get the brick cleaned up, but in the long run, it will leave you with a nicer looking house and less maintenance. Once Brick is in good shape, you don't have to paint it or anything. It'll stay good for much longer than any other facade you can put on your house.
If you need to convince your husband that he's the only one who doesn't like the house -
maybe post a picture of it here on Yahoo and have people give you feedback?

Painting it will make it harder to maintain forever. Brick is so great because it is easy to take care of. There is a process where the brick can be stained to change the look. - sounds better than painting. You could also try painting the door and any trim or shutters a different color to change the look too.

Personally, I don't like the look of painted brick. There's a couple of painted brick homes in our neighborhood and I really think it makes them look cheap. It just doesn't look right painted, sorry.

Personally I like the natural look of brick. I think painting over brick would be like painting over a fine grain wood!!

Our neighbor did and now regrets it. If you dont like it you really cant remove all the paint to get back to the brick (or at least not easily or cheaply)

Don't paint your brick! Get someone to sandblast it. It will look nice.
