we originally thought it was a boy as when we got him the people showed us how to feel the bones to see if they were closed or open (closed meaning boy coz the egg cant get through, open meaning girl coz there is a big space for the eggs to be layed) but now our bird looks like its trying to make a nest??? he has newspaper and stuff on the bottom of his cage and he is ripping it up and pulling it up over a log on the ground and he goes in under there. he did it a few weeks ago too but seemed to get over his phase but since we've cleaned his cage again and layed new newspaper and sandpaper hes doing it again. is "he" trying to make a nest???? does this mean my "boy" is a girl?? lol

i doubt it because it gets cleaned every few days, no longer than a week. and it has branches through the cage and there is one thin one that is pretty close to the ground and its ripping the paper and pulling it up over this branch and then going under it

Does your cockatiel have typical coloring or is it some mutation color? Because of course, in normal cockatiels, the males have bright yellow faces and grey tails and the females have a more muted grayish yellow face and striped tail feathers. If its gone through its first molt already, you should be able to tell.
But it does sound like nesting behaviour, he could just be playing. Also keep in mind that males will occasionally nest as well. If you see eggs, you will know.
Also, feeling a birds pelvis is rarely ever accurate and very few bird breeders would even consider that as a reasonable way of telling. Its just so likely to prove wrong since the difference between male and female isn't very much.

Usually, both the male and the female make nests, as in the wild, they both help each other. Usually, the male become really aggressive around the nest and is very protective of it. The female should lay eggs and then stay in the nest for a while warming them. Also, if your cockatiel talks or whistles, it is likely to be a male.

feeling its pelvis is not an accurate way to determines its sex. Infact it can hurt the cockatiel. Male cockatiels will start to whistle after 3 months. He will continue to whistle to find a mate and to let the female know that its safe to come in to nesting box after the male is done building the nest. Females don't whistle if so rarely do they whistle. I have a white face cinnamon pearl heavy pied that's 3 months and he's starting to whistle up a storm. just listen for the whistle.

I was told by a breeder that after the first molt the female cockatiel with have stripes on the underside of the tail feathers. I know there are several places that you can get the bird DNA sexed by sending in a few chest feathers. You contact them online, they send you a kit and you mail the chest feathers in. They then email back the results. We had to do that for our Quaker parrot

Most males have a bright orange patch on each side of his face, the females are not as bright. I have a male, and he tears up every piece of paper, he can get his beak on. He likes to sleep in the daytime in an shoe box. He has torn the bottom completely out of the box, and both sides. I don't know how many shoe boxes he has gone through. They just love to tear paper, so you can't tell that way!

so some distance as i understand with lutino cockatiels its virtually impossible to do it in keeping with actual traits. maximum cockatiels you may look below their wings and notice if there are bars or not, yet for that shade it doesnt artwork. the only way is to computer screen behaviour, see who lays an egg, or bypass get them dna examined for the y chromosome.

you can take "it" to a bird fair/show and sometimes they have a bird sexer. if it is grey with a white or yellow face, it's a boy. but if it's just a solid grey, it's a girl. the first pic is a boy and the second is a girl. i hope i helped
