I've heard the 40 GB isn't, but the 60 GB is the most, and I don't know where the 80 GB lies. Is this true?

The 20 and 60 are the most backward compatible because they have the emotion engine, which was the cpu used to run PS2 games. It's hard to find a 20 gb version anywhere, so if you want the most backward compatibile PS3, get the 60 gb version.

The 80 gb version for the most part can play most PS2 games, but the catch is that it uses software emulation, so there are still some games that's not playable on the PS3 until the programmers write the software emulation for those games. You've seen how well software emulation has worked for the 360. The 80 gb PS3 isn't that bad, but it's not as good as the 20 or 60 gb.

The 40 gb cannot play PS2 games whatsoever. It can't, and it won't. It can however play PSX games.

Yes, the 60GB PS3 is the most backward compatible and can play almost every PS1 and PS2 game. But the 80GB PS3 can't play as many PS1 and PS2 games and may have small problems during the gameplay during some PS1 and PS2 games.

The 40GB PS3 isn't backward compatible at all.

NTSC 20GB and NTSC 60GB are the best. They have two chips from PS2 (CPU-Emotion Engine, GPU-Graphics Synthesizer). That's why they play almost all PS2 games. 80GB has only GS chip - around 80% PS2 games run.
PAL 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 80GB.

the 80gb is backward compatible through software emulation and has alot of glitches.
