I'm drawing a piece on vietnam and in the background I want to have either a bunch of uh-1s flying together like in forrest gump or f-4 phantoms. What would be better or more realistic?

For the grunts the UH-1 would be much more evocative than the F-4 which was only ever seen briefly... unless he wanted to walk home. With the best will in the world, the F-4s did an important task, but the UH-1s were the guys who were most exposed. It takes skill and training to fly an F-4 over a hostile country, but it takes balls of solid brass to fly a paper thin UH-1 in to a hot LZ and then sit there and wait while they load you up then fly out over the bad guys.

The Phantom is one of my all time favorite aircraft, but in this instance I have to go for the Huey.

On balance, I'd go for the Hueycobra. They were the earliest form of Helo gunships, and, although primitive compared to today's AH 64 Apaches, are probably more firmly identified with the Vietnam era than the F4, which remained in service from pre'Vietnam (the early 60's) until the F14 Tomcat and the F15 Eagle came into service in the late 70's. Show anyone a picture of an F4, and they MAY think of Vietnam (if they're old enough). Show anyone a picture of a Hueycobra and they WILL think of Vietnam, possibly even if they're NOT old enough. I wouldn't go for a bunch, though. By and large Hueycobras flew their missions singly, or in pairs. Maybe two of them, like the Bell 47's in the opening credits of the TV series MASH?

For Vietnam, the Huey was the spotlight vehicle to invoke the feeling.

Every movie, most songs and a lot of book I have read all use the Huey as an important part of the realism when it comes to the Vietnam experience.

Try watching Platoon or Hamburger Hill sometime... what aircraft do you see?

Hueys, definitely.
IF you want just the coolest scene, try to find the opening scene from "More American Graffitti" aka "Purple Haze" I was told? Really neat shots of a few Hueys at low level over this marshy delta river area with "Heat Wave" by Martha and the Vandellas playing, really neat for a chopper head.

I'd have to go with the UH-1, that WAS VietNam

since vietnam was the "helicopter" war, being that is when the helicopter matured into what it is today, i would use several UH-1's in the picture, along with a number of cobra attack choppers as well.
