The English equivalent is Jacob, as in the Genesis bible patriarch. Diego means, "supplanter" and so does "Jacob." Jacob was the twin brother of Esau and Jacob was given his brothers inheritance after tricking his father into doing so. However, many think he was the most blessed one and his father's favorite. There is a long but true story.

Diego means supplanter, and in English, the name is Jacob. Here are some links you might find handy. Peace!

Jaime is the spanish equivalent of James. Diego doesn't have an English equivalent just like Ashley doesn't have a Spanish equivalent.

I'm not sure, but I think that Diego is supposed to be one of the Spanish equivalents of James. The other is Jaime.

Personally, I think a name is a name and doesn't need to be translated. I suspect the people above who've said "James" are right.

Additional: It is right. Here are some sources:

Also apparently Jacob is a version of this same name, which explains why the two possible answers are James and Jacob.

It probably does mean James, but just as another opinion, when I baptized my son, they said the alterantive names for JACOB included Diego.
