Contact the local Red Cross or a local hospital and ask about first aid classes. For choking, you need to learn how to do the Heimlich Maneuver properly (it's different on a child than an adult), and it wouldn't hurt to learn CPR as well.

well mothers do just jump in. The thing we learn in nursing is that if the person is choking and wheezing than really nothing can be done. Air is still passing through the airway. The respirations are still in place. All you can do is calm them down. Usually we say things like 'its ok, just cough it up...' sort of thing. And usually they do. The only time you do anything is when the person can't breathe. Than you must jump in and do thrusts to remove it, hopefully before they are unconcious. If they go unconcious the doctor has to be called (or if you are at home, go to ER). So as long as the person is still having some coughing and breathing function, than all is good. Most of the time peopel can cough it up.
You know how people will hit choking individuals on the back. Well we were taught that usually will sucessfully lodge the item and thus cut off breathing. So, no hitting or patting the back.

Don't let anyone make you feel like an idiot.. actually A LOT of parents don't know CPR or the Heimlich maneuver.. we aren't born with that knowledge.. And most people would panic in that situation.. You live.. you learn! Now you know that anything is possible, so go take a CPR/Heimlich maneuver class and you will be better prepared if you are ever in that situation again.. maybe you will be saving someone else's little one.

Janice,
Your local hospital probably has free classes to teach you cpr and other techniques to help you be more prepared for this type of thing:
Here's a link to some information about children and choking:
http://children.webmd.com/guide/choking-rescue-procedure-heimlich-maneuver
Be informed. You're the parent. You can do it!
Hope this helps!

What a scary situation! You poor thing - you must have been so frightened! To help protect yourself and your daughter, please look into first aid classes through local hospitals, Red Cross, YMCA, etc. They are inexpensive, and many are even free. You should learn CPR, Heimlich, etc. to help keep your daughter safe. The most important thing is that you're prepared so that in the event you have another emergency like that again and nobody else is around, you'll be prepared.

Take a CPR class at the YMCA or your local hospital. They have a separate class for child CPR usually.
Also, if you panic, call 911 and they should be able to talk you through it. But I would take the class so you don't have to rely on 911.

Check with your local rec center or the Red Cross. They offer CPR and other lifesaving techniques. The heimlich maneuver is what you would use. It's really very simple. Glad someone was there to help!

the best thing to do is to take a cpr/first aid training course. it will help you be prepared if it were to ever happen again. also, I know it's difficult in a crisis, but stay calm and call 911. they can walk you through what to do
