It depends a lot on personalities and circumstances. Under $500 dollars is a lot, If everyone was not in a good mood or she had any prior history it could go badly.

In this extreme case

If she's under 18 it won't go on her permanate record.

What's the other incident you mentioned?

$500 worth of merchandise isn't a minor offense, stealing a lipstick is. She will have to pay a fine and do community service if it's her first time with probation, if she has been caught before she may have to go to juvie. Which would mean an unexcused absence from school - which would affect her permanent educational record when looking to get into colleges.

If she's 18 and the judge comes down on her - cause she should know better being a straight A student & all...well, worry about that if it happens.

Did she or her parents sign the citation? If so that counts as an admission of guilt.

addl comments: If she's 14 it won't go on her permanant record, BUT she totally screwed herself by giving the wrong information. Doesn't matter that she was nervous - show me a thief who isn't! She'll get a fine, probation and probably community service - besides being banned from the store.

how old is she. i got caught shoplifting once when i was 17, i was on the brink of being an adult. as long as they contacted her parents and they came to pick her up she's not going to jail. i had stolen under 200, so i was told i'd have to pay a fine of 200, and i wasn't allowed back in the store. however, i was so nice and told them everything, and they could tell i felt remorse that they never made me pay the fine. i'm grateful that i was caught, my shoplifting was an addiction. i'm now 19 and i havn't done it since. i was caught exactly a month from the day i started shoplifting.

she just got a citation???? WTF? i was caught shoplifting...186 dollars worth of jewelery to be exact and they sent my *** straight to juvie..i was only there for a couple a days though and after that i got a P.O. and i got 6 months probation with monthly drug tests and 24 hours of community service, and i had to take a 6 hour drug class...but besides that its not a big deal im off probation next month and when i could hire a lawyer to get my records sealed...that way nobody can have access to them...but since i cant afford it, i will have to wait till im 18 then my record will become restricted, only certain people will have access to it...dont worry the important thing is that she learns from the whole experience... :)

I read your other post concerning this. Having a bad home life because everyone calls her a thief is not grounds for being one. She knew what she was doing since she made sure she removed the tags before she walked out. I wonder about you. Why would you be trying to protect her?

That's hardly minor now is it? Who cares about her grades? She's on her way to a life of crime. Given she was uncooperative because she wanted to try to et out of it NOT because of being nervous. I wouldn't have anything good to say about a girl like this if it was a relative or friend. Traumatized, I highly doubt that! YEP, she should be worried.

well since she is minor, she isnt going to jail or wherever.
she might have to take shoplifting classes.
and since she is a good student at school and this is her first its not going to be bad. next time just admit it because my boyfriend got caught shoplifting and he admit it right away to the police and didnt even need to go to court.
