I'm from South Carolina, and I just hate how things shut down sooo early around here (grocery stores, convenient stores, drug stores, etc)!! One night my daughter wa running a fever, and every store was closed!! I was just wondering about a city such as New York.

Funny...someone else just asked that same question I gave an answer to.

The reason why we are the "city that never sleeps" is because there are so many things here that are open 24/7. There are pharmacies around open 24 hours, have that urge for a pizza? 24 hour pizzerias. Have the urge to bowl? There is one bowling alley in Queens open 24 hours a day? Don't have a car? That's okay too....our subways run 24 hours a day as well as most bus lines.

The city is just non-stop!

Basically because you can always find something to do at any given time in NYC. Lights don't turn off in Times Sq. or in some buildings. Traders works the foreign markets throughout the night. We aren't subjected to curfews like some other places. You can pretty much find a 24 hour bagel store or 24 hour deli in each borough or within a mile from where ever you are. Clubs and bars stay open until 4 a.m. and then you can head to an after-hours party at some other club. Work hours can run 9a-5p or graveyard shift 12a-8a or anytime in between. There are some theaters open until 3 or 4 am. Quite literally, NYC is the city that never sleeps. Something, somewhere is going on at any given hour in NYC whether you are aware of it or not. I hope this answers your question or intrigues you to visit. It is a great city.

NYC is like Las Vegas it's a 24/7 town. Since there are 20 million people living in the NYC Metro area, there is always someone outside and plenty of stores never close day and night.

I love NY and have lived here all my life! its called "the city that never sleeps" because everyone is constantly on the move doing something and because everywhere is open till really late, and especially since the best time to be in the city is at night when the lights turn on and everyone is out walking around to somewhere.

Having lived in NYC for seven years I can tell you that there is always something happening. People eat dinner late. Everything is open late, even construction takes place at night. The city is going 24/7....There is a drugstore open every few blocks 24/7.

There are a great many 24 hour 7 day stores that are always open. There are bars, clubs, restaurants, supermarkets, and galleries that are open at night. It's possible to live solely at night- I did so for a few years when I worked the night shift and my sleep cycle changed.

There is a bad side- there's always noise, noise, noise!

It literally does not sleep..something is always going on..you can pretty much get whatever you need during anytime. It is that type of city and it has a reputation for being busy, on the run, and of course, the city that never sleeps...

because it doesn't.

the greengrocer i shop at 2 blocks away is open 24/7. their prices are no doubt higher than they should be, and i could indeed shop everywhere else, but the fact that there are so *many* stores open 24/7 keeps even high prices on the reasonable side, and it's not so much to pay for this kind of convenience.

You can pretty much get what you need here 24/7 seven days a week - mainly as far as many restaurants (mostly diners, but a few more upscale) , grocery stores and drug stores being open -- also nightlife starts late and ends early in the morning.
