For many years, Hong Kong was an independent country that was a British territory. I believe it was in 1997 that it reverted to China.

More than likely, they still act and consider themselves independent.

Hong Kong is part of China. However, before 1997, it was a british colony. Even after 1997, when HK returned back to China, it is still an independent city, 2 legal systems. We call it Hong Kong SAR, Special Administrative Region. That's why Hong Kong has its own flag.

That's why most people say "One country, 2 systems".

It is just like Macau, it is part of China but they say they are from Macau, not China

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, and was a crown colony of the United Kingdon from 1842 until the transfer of its soverenity to the People's Republic of China in 1997.

Anyone born prior to 1997 would be from Hong Kong, not China.
