Please, please please do not make excuse for him. R U not precious enough not to be used as a punching bag. Having a child/children together does not mean you can be used and abuse. Allow them both to have full access but do not rekindle any old spark. You will regret it.

Here are the steps you need to take:
1. Forgive him.
2. Forgive yourself for having a child with a fool.
3. Move OUT. NOW.
4. Never do this AGAIN.
5. Repeat step 2.
6. Walk in victory, and be not entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

NO, I would not forgive being hit. That kind of thing usually happens again if it happens once and only gets worse with time. I am a forgiving person, but without anger management counseling, how is that kind of thing for sure not going to happen again?

no matter if he as been drinking or not, that's no excuse for hitting a woman. once maybe but any more then that big no no. my mother-in-law's partner is the same and as reported him, i think you should do the same or tell him that you will if he hits you or the child

no way, at the moment the drink is the excuse , wont be long before he doesent need an excuse, or a drink, that just shows you the real person.

get rid of them, someone who thinks they can do something like that whilst drunk and get away with an "I'm sorry" will do it again. I watched my mother get beaten for years as a child, no one has that right

NO.
You must NEVER ever accept behaviour like that. If its happened once, it will happen again.
You must NOT forgirve this person.
Seriously. Stand your ground and walk away.
