Why not call the police academy and ask? Many academies have specific requirements which may include NOT bringing your own gun.

Well, as someone before me said, ask the police academy. My police academy had a specific gun (Glock 17) and nothing else.
Assuming they don't have such a requirement. Call the police department(s) that you are thinking about getting on with. Most PDs provide a weapon, but many still require you to purchase your own. So if you want to get on with Gotham City and think you have a pretty good shot of getting on with them and they carry the Glock 22...You probably should get the Glock 22.
I mention the Glock 22, because it is the most common Law Enforcement firearm. You can't go wrong with it.
If you don't like the Glock 22, just get someone you like. Ruger, Smith and Wesson, Sig, Glock, Springfield, H&K all make fine firearms. Most of them are in law enforcement calibers. One might fit your hand be easier to shoot for you then the others, so test a few (most gun that also have a range will generally let you put a few rounds through a weapon before you make your decision.)
Also check on holsters before you make a decision. It is hard to find holsters for some of the less common law enforcement firearms. So try to stick with Beretta, Sig, Springfield, Glock, ect.

You are probably talking about a .45 GAP.
I'd say try the Springfiled XD in the same calibre. A good fit of the hand is important. Buy a weapon from a place that will let you fire it first as well.
Avoid off brand pistols of course. There is nothing wrong with a Glock either. I carry one myself, but we have department issued weapons. Honestly though I think the Springfield is a better weapon at the same cost or less.

Check with the academy and the agency or agencies you might want to work for, most department want all of the officers to use the same weapon so in case you are hit and another officer can use your ammo.

Find out what weapons are authorized for your department. Them go shoot them all. Try qualifying with all of them to find out which one you shoot the most accurately and is most comfortable. Which ever one is at the top of the list I would seriously consider as the one to get.
