I definitely agree with you... I think it's a pity, because as a Brazilian native, and, obviously, as a person who has Portuguese as the mother tongue, I always realize that nobody really seems to be interested in my language... I rarely find people here in Y!answers asking questions about Portuguese lessons... I mean, the one which is spoken here in Brazil, of course...
it's really sad =(

Usually oppurtunities support growth. Hence why people learn German, French, Italian, or Japanese before Portuguse, they are more often used in the business world, and someone who knows one of those languages in addition to English (for example) is a huge asset for any company.

I believe it is because the majority of the developed world is based around england, australia and us and the main languages apart from english are french, german, spanish etc.
Portuguese is a small language next to all of them. Brazil is a developing country so doesnt get much notice by westerners :(

I don't think it's underrated; rather there's not much of it spoken except in Portugal, Brazil, Goa, etc. There are more Spanish-speaking countries in the world than there are Portuguese-speaking countries, so Spanish has the edge. Sorry ⺠Mandarin is similar - lots of speaker, but all concentrated rather than global.

have you ever tried t learn it?? Boy! it's the most difficult language to learn - it leaves you with a knot in your tongue!
I think that is one of the reasons why almost only the natives speek Portuguese.
