Sorry, I know this isn't the perfect category but there really isn't one for animal husbandry.

just a metal cone that goes around the neck to prevent movement while you take an axe to it...

I hadn't really considered the putting on of it....this will be the first time I've butchered without help so I'm looking to make it easy on myself.

They do keep them from flapping around because they can't get any purchase. Stuff them in, head down, and slice their neck and then wait for them to drip-dry.

Simple and effective.

As it says in the link below, you want to cut the jugular, but not the wind pipe. The chicken knows it is stuck but doesn't really know it's all but dead that way. One of my friends has a small chicken operation as a hobby on their arable/sheep/cattle farm in Northumberland, mostly for the eggs, but with some for meat.

Have no idea what a killing cone is, but to lessen the struggle, put the chicken on the block and draw a white line down it, in front of the it's eyes. The bird just kind of freezes for a few minutes staring at the line. A quick chop with the ax and dinner is served!

So that's what a cone is. Never used one or heard of one, but I imagine trying to get one of the darn things on a bird would cause more struggle than anything else. I know it's not fun, but if you are able to get the bird in your arms to put a cone on it, you can wring it's neck just as easily.

Would you rather have someone just give you a whack and get it over with? Or struggle to get some silly thing over your head then give you the whack?

Personally, the axe is best.

EDIT--- The first time I did it the chicken scared the crap out of me with all the flapping. Of course I was only 7 at the time. Use leather gloves, make sure when you grab his head that you cover his eyes and he will go docile.

Basically wrap your hand around his head, fling his body over a block and do a quick simple chop. This is the most effective way to make it easy on yourself and the chicken.

Best of luck!

It sounds as if you know what you're talking about already. The cone just restricts theri movement and makes it easier to chop off their head. In that sense, it is the easiest and most effective method to use. Without the cone, they can flop around while you are trying to get their heads on the chopping block and make it hard to take their heads off with one clean chop.

Just grab them by the head and twirl the body around a couple of times. The head comes off, the chicken dies.
Otherwise if concern for doing it a humane way, pet them to death.

We used to hang them upside down from the clothes line and cut their heads off, they didn't flip flop all over the place when ya did it like that. This was years ago when my family had chickens for eggs and for meat.
