I have a slight cough and I can see that my tonsils are slightly red. Also there is pleghm stuck in my throat and when I cough it has a strange odor. Also it feels as if I have a lump in my throat(there isn't really one). I'm taking cough sryup, halls, etc. but they are making m drowsy and sleep a lot. What can I do and if it might be a infection, what can I do w/o having to go to the doctor?

In my experience, the best expectorant on the market (OTC) is mucinex (sp?). It really works and works fast.

Drink only hot beverages, no ice water or cold drinks. I reccomend, from personal experience with congestion, instant hot and sour (Chinese) soup, usually you get buy it in the international food section, it really kills anything!! Drink hot tea, broth, hot chocolate, anything warm to really break it up. Gargle with hot water mixed with a few shakes of salt, as warm as you can stand it but be careful not to burn your throat-a few times a day. Drink a lot of water too, don't get dehydrated, really flush your body out. I recently had some type of infection last week, including muscle aches, sore throat, coughing up gross stuff, congestion, and I feel 100% better this week by doing these few things!! I was ready to go to the doctor-I am breastfeeding my six month old son and thought I had mastitis. The Mucinex also helps too, but irritates my stomach sometimes, the OTC name is guaifensin, the syrup costs about $2 at Target, Walmart, the brand name is more expensive. Good luck to you.

1. Take a cough medicine with guafinessin in it. Plain robitussin or robitussin liquigels (generic brand is okay), mucinex is the same med.
2. Drink a lot of water (or other liquids).
3. Celestial Seasons has an Echinacea tea. In general, I don't do hot tea, but this really helped my sore throat.
4. Sleep as much as you can.

If you're not better in a couple of days, you'll need to see a dr. because you may have tonsillitis and need an antibiotic.
