I make sure my children (8 and 12) along with everyone else in the house get it every year and the pneumonia shot every 3 yrs. Both of my kids have asthma and any resp infection usually puts them in the hospital so I hate to take chances

I'm 13 and I have asthma. My Doctor tells that it isn't wise to get a flu shot. MY mom didn't listen to him once and I did get the flu shot. Unfortunately I got the flu really bad that year. Since then I haven't got the flu shot and haven't had the flu.

The side effects from the vaccine (sore arm) are mild compared to actually getting the flu. The flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Every year in the United States, on average:

* 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu;
* more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and;
* about 36,000 people die from flu.

Some people, such as the elderly and young children, are particularly vulnerable to getting the flu. Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.

I've had the flu several times and every time I thought I needed to get my affairs in order. I was SOOOO sick, gave it to everyone around me, etc. I make sure my kids get flu shots every year (17, 21).

influenza can be deadly to the very young or old, so these populations should be immunized.

The draw back I find as an adult, is that its almost a guarantee to get mildly sick, where I've only had the flu 1-2 in my life.

I would defer to my doctor, but I think it kinda depends on your outlook on life or adversity to risk.
