How old do you have to be to change your surname with your mothers permission, i'm 16, can I change it now?

Yes. My mother got remarried when I was 5, and asked me to change my name when I was 9, so I think you're good. 2 more years, and you can change it yourself, too.

I'm sure the laws are different in different states, but you can petition the courts to allow you to change your name. My son petition the courts for a name change when he was 10 years old. We didn't go adoption because we wanted the decision to be his. He had to stand before the judge and say this was his decision and something he wanted.
