How far do you need to run? If only a mile I'd say 4 - 5 mile runs.

To build stamina or endurance you must run distance.

Train to do what the test requires.
Run 3 to 5 days each week, do more than the distance of the test.

You have to practice what you are going to do.
To get better you have to stress yourself because you will get into a comfort zone and not improve if you just run the same thing each day.

One great misconception on this web site is that questioners assume that everyone else knows what they mean. What is stamina??? I know and understand running but I have no idea what the police academy power test is.

Please tell us your objective and you will get much better replies.

Depends on the type of endurance.

If you want sustained endurance like marathon runners then best thing is to actually run in a systematic manner at a constant pace.

If you want something that requires bursts of speed along with endurance then you should consider interval training. For example, jog 6 minutes and sprint 30 seconds and repeat.
