Hi a friend of mine has a criminal background but is trying to get his life together and go to SAC(santa ana college in CA) to become a RN!! Is this going to be possible for him? Will he be excepted to the Nursing Program!? I know they check people back grounds, how likely will it be that he can get his Associate degree in Nursing at SAC? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Contrary to a previous responder, there is a difference in obtaining an initial license and keeping a license. A nurse who uses or abuses controlled drugs, and asks to be placed on the state's impaired provider program is often protected by making the request for help. If a person has a previous felony conviction for controlled substances they can be denied initail application.

The web site instructions leave some ambiguity in the California rules, your friend should contact the California Board of Nursing before applying to school. If his conviction would preclude his getting a license in California, then I would think the school would have problems with his working in the clinical environment.

It really depends on what felonies this person has on their record. Nurses that get addicted to pain meds in other words steals the patient's pain meds commit a felony. They are usually sent to a rehab center then continue with their nursing career. I have seen people admitted to the Nursing program where I live that have a felon. I do not know the laws in CA but I would suggest this person speak with the director of nursing at SAC before I would continue taking the prerequisites for nursing.

it is going to likely be difficult. you will would desire to place some concept into the computerized assumption that many employers would have in that a recuperating alcohol does not would desire to be around narcotics and prescriptions via fact the possibility is purely too great. Being around drugs is an important area of the pastime for a nurse. i can't supply you the magic words to rebut any presumptions (truthful or unfair) employers would have, yet purely comprehend that this would be a key impediment for you.

Check with the school. Most of the time they will inform you to contact an attorney. Depending on California's state laws, this might limit your friend from working on the health care industry.

Also, you can try to contact your states licensing facility. They will probably have information on this as well.

Good Luck.
