Lookup Airborne laser. The yanks modded a 747 with a giant chemical laser that heats the skin of a missile and the weakness on one side causes the missile to fall apart.
Effective range is about 300km though its never got beyond the advanced prototype.

The Military Channel was showing an airplane based laser cannon capable of locking onto a missile and firing a laser pulse that can destroy missiles in flight.

The government isn't going to tell us what stuff they have deployed already, so you can bet it is better than what they are showing on TV. It wouldn't surprise me to know they have space based laser anti-missile weapons out there already.

g-day!

Nominally effective anti-ballistic missle (ABM) systems exist, but none have been deployed extensively enough to offer protection against full-scale strategic strikes. The current philosophy is to continue using threat of retaliation (MAD) to deter such attacks, but use ABMs to defend against small scale strikes by 'rogue states' such as North Korea or Iran.

Those two strategies are getting in eachother's way, though, as ABM positioned to defend Europe or Isreal from Iran would also be clase enough to Russia to intercept thier missles, which could be interpreted as a move to enhance NATO first strike capability against them.

i don't think your teacher meant that kind of solution because there was not any in the 50s and ballistic missile technology is a bit complicated for school history. i think he meant diplomatic solutions etc
