and what exactly are they..

They are called aphthae, meaning small ulcers. They are presumably caused by a virus, but that has not been proved with certainty. Aphthae can also occur on the gums, lips and inner cheeks. They usually resolve without treatment, after about four to seven days of mild to moderate discomfort.
