showing that these christians lack any real knowledge and understanding of what evolution is.

so it seems to me christians are afraid to pick up a science book.

but atheists have no problem picking up a bible.

what gives?

edit: you can input the word "some" or "most" in front of the two generalizations. as im sure some christians do open science books and have an understanding, likewise some atheists dont bother reading any of the bible.

Tx Guy, the question is, why do you think that is?

well I for one realize how little I knew about evolution. So I did a little studying on the subject over the last few days. {just to give myself some knowledge on both sides of arguments here.} Can't debate if you don't know the topic. I found it very interesting and intend to educate myself more on the subject. And you're right but ; I always did say that Atheist know the Bible better then most Christians.

Because religion is dogmatic (ie it lays out what it calls the "truth" and makes it clear that challenging this truth is a bad idea), many Christians don't like to hear opposing views.

Science, on the other hand, only moves forward when what is currently called the "truth" is challenged. It thrives on conflict, and without it we would still be living in the dark ages.

Remember, the same people who challenge evolution today would have put people to death for saying the earth moves around the sun a few hundred years ago. It's just that putting people to death is trickier in the US than it was in Europe in the 15th century. But the M.O. is the same.

I think that in a lot of cases, atheists became atheist AFTER doing the research first, (they're not atheist because they *refuse* to pick up a Bible, part of the reason they're atheist is BECAUSE they picked up a Bible and read it.) while the people who post questions showing a lack of understanding of science lack the understanding *because* they refuse to pick up a science book. (Due to their religious beliefs.)
So most atheists don't believe in religion BECAUSE they read the relevant books, and the people who post misinformation about evolution do so because they REFUSED to read the relevant books.

The same can be said about Atheists directing questions towards the Bible. There are a LOT of questions critical of the Bible that seem to be based on some very questionable arguments.

Neither side seems to be too well educated about the other.

It is a shame since I am an Atheist and I spend more time debating with other Atheists because their arguments make little or no sense.

Trying to maintain a belief system against all incoming evidence requires that you hide from the evidence.

Being willing to accept new evidence is more common among atheists than among theists (although not all theists are totally bullheaded about it.)

Yes, it was actually reading the bible, especially Revelation, that turned me away from the bible. It was so illogical and such a mess, that i couldnt believe that a omnipotent God could have written (through humans of course) such drivel!!....Most Christians have not even read the bible from cover to cover, because churches discourge this. Instead they let the church leaders do it for them and tell them the "important" parts....

I actually learned about evolution in highschool. Never once did it change my mind....in fact I thought it rather ridiculous and odd they would actually teach that. But since it was a public school of course they are going to teach the alternative to the actual truth of God's word. The bible is the truth and actually convicts the hearts of sinners-- because the power of God moves in many people, and opens their eyes to His truth.

I am a christian and I am very interested in science...it explains how God designed everything to work together perfectly - God knew how this stuff worked at the beginning of time, but we are just figuring it out!

Also, I understand where you could believe in evolution, but if evolution were true....then why do we still have orangutans and monkeys and apes?
