We started puting shoes and socks on our son during the day and was wondering if anyone else is doing this? We have hard floors throughout the house so it keeps his feet protected and also makes leaving the house so much faster.

My husband has worn shoes almost everyday since birth and he has no foot problems or motor skill problems. He was even know to sleep in them once in a while. If you toddler is walking well before you put shoes on him he has already learned those "motor skills". Also if parents are worried about that remove the shoes before bedtime to give them some barefoot time. Also Striderite has shoes which allow the foot to move more freely and allow them to feel the ground and they have worked great for us.

I say there is nothing wrong with what you are doing as long as the shoes fit properly. We are in and out of the house most of the day and I'm not about to put the shoes on and off 20 times a day. So once they go on they stay on until we are in for the night. Even then it's up to them if they want to keep them on.

Since my husband is part Japanese, none of us really like shoes, and we have carpet, we never wear shoes in the house. We wear socks a lot though. My daughter will be 3 in January and she's learning to put her own socks and shoes on and I love it!

No, because he's taking a nap. But after he gets up, I won't put shoes on him unless we're going outside. Some people wear shoes all the time, but I'm just not like that.

I have some relatives, though, that would be cringing and gagging to read your post. They keep their shoes on a mat by the door, and put them on last before they leave, and take them off as soon as they return. The next step is to go and wash their hands, and their kids hands. It's a bit extreme, but I can see their point.

THe bottom of your shoes comes into contact with everything that anyone has ever spilled on the floor, be it paint, cleaner, soup, milk, garbage, etc. They get used gum and dog poop, and all sorts of other things on them. And if you walk back into your own home, without taking them off, you spread those germs on your own floors.

And I don't know about your son, but if mine drops a chip or cracker or whatever in the living room, he's gonna pick it up and eat it. That's okay in your own home, but if he dropped something in the Wal-Mart parking lot, would you let him eat it? Or how about if he dropped it on the floor in the mall?

It's disgusting to think about, and really germ-a-phobic, but I don't like people to walk through my home with their shoes on. You can't put a bubble around your kid to keep germs out, but as long as he's still putting anything in his mouth, I'm going to try and keep them to a minimum.

My toddler goes to daycare, so she's probably wearing shoes right now. However, they're probably someone else's shoes, because all of the kids there like to trade shoes! everyday i pick her up, i have to make sure she has her own shoes one! In re: your son, I don't think it matters. But you should let him go shoeless sometimes, because who likes their feet in shoes and socks all day!!

I have 8 kids (2 kids of my own (3.5 month old and 22 months old), a niece that lives with me(3.5 years old) and my fiance's 5 kids-4,6,9 and 11 year old twins). The toddlers' ages are 1.5 (in two months she'll be two), 3.5 and 4. The 1.5 year old refuses to wear sneakers, but wears socks at home. The 3.5 year old will wear her slippers around the house and the 4 year old goes barefoot. My 3.5 month old will kick off her sneakers if I put them on in the house, so mostly it's socks or barefoot.

I think that they move around well with their prefrences and it makes my life easier.

No, at home my toddler son just wears socks or barefoot. Going out, putting shoes on is part of the regime and he gets excited we are going out :)

No. My 4 yr old takes his shoes and socks off as soon as he gets home. That's just how he's comfortable. I can't even keep shoes on that child!!

I don't think that is a good idea, in fact, i think its a bad idea.

Your toddler should be barefoot for him to get used to it.

We have hard floors all over the house and my 20 month old sister is walking just fine barefoot.

We only put her shoes on when its time to go out and she knows when its time to go out because when she see's me or my mum holding her shoes she goes "shooz" and "biy biy".

You should associate shoes with going out because you dont want him to rely on shoes all the time.

Well i'm 13 but i have been taking care or my sister for most of her life so i know a lot about babys.

hope ive helped xxxxx
