I've been asked by the city of Frankfurt to provide information on the people for whom the following streets on the now closed Rhein Main Air Base were named. It's possible that streets on other air force bases were named after them also. They are: Hewell Road, Ellis Road and Boyd Road. Any historical information on any of these gentlemen would be appreciated.

Streets on military bases tend to be named after individuals that have done something especially noteworthy in whatever service is running that base.

Navy bases almost all have a Nimitz road (or street, boulevard or avenue), many Marine bases have named streets "Puller" (for Gen "Chesty" Puller) and Army bases all seem to have something named "McArthur".

Streets are also named for places, and it's possible that "Hewell Road" was named for a town in Maine. The Navy had a USS Hewell (AG-145).

There was a Lt Hewell in the Continental Army that died of wounds received at Georgetown, a Major General Billy Ellis and a Colonel John Boyd in the Air Force (although they both served mostly after WWII, each had served in Germany, and it is possible that those roads were named for them).

Other than that, it's often difficult to find the history of street and building names on active bases, as the records are often lost and forgotten.

Yes, that does seem to defeat the whole purpose of naming something after a person, but it's the way it is.

Most military bases name their streets and buildings based on these 4 things: Died in combat, received Medal of Honor, great leader, and states.
