So, I'm reading a lot about dedicating yourself specifically to one or two Netjer, and giving yourself a Shemsu name. Are either necessary?

I'm perfectly comfortable with my own name [Renee] unless it is displeasing to Netjer. Also, I really wouldn't mind worshiping all of them equally (well, not *all* right away, since there are hundreds, but rather all of which I know well).

Years before I was into Kemetic Religion I was strictly Aset-based, though more Greco-Roman all-encompassing-goddess Isis, than Aset. Could that be a sign that she is already picked out for me, or would choosing one require much longer study?

I don't agree with dedicating to a single god/dess, as you note there are many to learn about. I find there are some that you may be drawn to at first, but then move on to others later when the time is right. I feel the point is to experience what each may bring to you & to understand the purpose of each. Ptah was the first I followed.
In the Egyptian deity structure there is no main god. Different god/dess were deemed the primary deity depending on the time of year & location of their temple.
As for the name thing, I wouldn't worry about it. (I like Renee too)
