The answers stating you could get into trouble all seem to accept as fact that your friend was actually involved. I do not know if he was or wasn't since you do not claim either.
IF your friend was responsible & you know it then refusing can open doors to you. But the police will have to prove you knew. And if he is responsible [or you highly suspect he may be responsible], be a good citizen & tell what you know.
If your friend was not responsible, then why not tell what you know in defense of your friend?
You are claiming you do not want to be involved but you fail to see you already are involved. If you weren't, the police would not have visited you.

If you are subpeoned, you will have to tell them what you know. The 5th ammendment only allows you to avoid incriminating yourself, not others. Therefore, you can not refuse to respond to the subpeona. You don't have to talk to the police in most jurisdictions, however.

It is possible to be charged as an accessory after the fact, or with obstruction of justice if you help your friend. This help can be either hiding evidence or, in some jurisdictions, refusing to answer questions. I'd check with a local lawyer just to make sure.

You can refuse to disclose any information you want. Remember this if your friend gets caught and he tells the cops that you knew what he did he can get you in trouble. The cops can make it look like you was involved as the 3rd party.

Never talk to police, or detectives if they are gathering information against you in a criminal investigation. Tell them you have nothing to say. If they continue plead the 5th and ask for a lawyer. It is much better for a lawyer to speak for you. And lawyers will always tell you not to say anything to detectives as well. Good luck

All you have to do is say I won't answer any questions without a lawyer presant. The only way you are gonna have to talk is if you are ordered to court and of course if you are under oath. But if they come up to your door you don't want to lie just tell them you won't say anything without a lawyer presant.

I guess they decided not to go any further at that time. But you are looking at a possible felony and the police may look into it further and come back to arrest you. Or they may come back with an arrest warrant to take you to jail.
