Yes...

The songwriting credits are shared between Mark Knopfler and Sting. Sting was visiting Montserrat during the recording of the song, and was invited to add some background vocals. Sting has stated that his only contribution was the "I Want My MTV" line, which was sung in partial parody of his own song "Don't Stand So Close to Me", originally recorded by The Police. Sting was embarrassed when his publishing company insisted on a co-writing credit and royalties.

RE:
Does Sting sing backing vocals on "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits?

Yes. It was kind of lucky that Sting was visiting Montserrat during the time this song was being cut, and he was invited to sing the background vocals since he was there. Sting is credited with a writing credit for his dynamically effective use of the seminal MTV slogan.

Another amazing fact is that lead singer and primary songwriter for Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, is not a big fan of overblown videos, and had to be persuaded to allow this song to have a concept video. Thank goodness he relented.

Yes, it is a bizarre music biz thing... at the time of the recording, Sting was under contract to a different record label than Dire Straits, so for Sting's contribution to be credited BOTH labels would have had to agree to the "loan" of Sting's vocals....much simpler to just thank him.

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tr.im/Fv7DJ

Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.

Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.
