Great question! The fact that mankind is inheritly wicked. You do not teach a child jeolousy or hate, it is almost "just there". You can see this by giving a child a toy and not the other. Watch what happens. Just this year we have heard the news of a jealous mother murdering a woman, ripping her newborn out of her womb and passing it off as her own.
Virginia Tech, and many other things show us that man is naturally wicked and selfish.
When Jesus came to earth, he did not call us morally flawed but that we fail to reach the standard that God has set for us, holyness. He was the embodiement of what was pure and upright and goes onto say, that what makes us "unclean" is not what goes inside of us but what comes out. We may have not murdered anyone but he says if you hate someone you have already killed that person in your heart. In God's eyes its all the same.

Believing and accepting can be accomplished through basic conscienceness (that 'this isnt right') feeling.
Conviction...now thats an entirely DIFFERENT story. True conviction and repentance is through God only.
