Nope, but it lets the asker know that you're not being serious. I've always hated "Lol" but since I started coming to this forum, I've used it. Otherwise, some people take my goofy answers (which are about 80 or 90% of all my answers) seriously.

It's a form of expression. Haha can mean, I find it a little funny. Whereas LOL, or others like ROFL, LMAO... etc, just express what written words can't easily do in an impersonal forum like this. It can be annoying if its used to much I guess, but it doesn't really matter to me.

I think they do it to convey tone. It's very hard to get tone from a text message. By throwing in the "LOL" they are trying to be funny or their answer is more the tongue-in-cheek variety.

WWJD = What would Jesus do? It's become a catch phrase for Christians, like "Do you smell what the Rock is cooking?"

Generally when someone puts LOL in their answer, the are indicating that they found the question funny, not that they believe their answer is funny. On the other hand, if someone is laughing at their own joke, that usually means that it isn't really that funny.

Since there is no voice inflection in the written word, I assume they do it to make sure the reader realizes either their answer is not serious or they find the question to be funny.

Noes....Just because someone laughs doesn't make them funnier....unless they fall over when they laugh but then you wouldn't see that from the text "lol".

No. They just think it gives them free reign to get away with an insult.

Unfortunately most of them are not actually laughing out loud - because I don't hear it and often don't get it..
