During the past couple months, the base of my big toe on my right foot sometimes hurts for no reason! I could just be sitting down and it'll start hurting and a few minutes later, the pain will go away but then it'll return again hours or days later. My toe looks fine. There's no bruising or swelling of it, it just randomly hurts. Does anyone know what could be wrong with it?

The base of the big toe corresponds with the neck, in reflexology. When having a treatment my reflexologist will twirl the big toe around and call it "ringing the neck". What she is really trying to do is relieve the tension in the nerves that run into the feet from the neck. When you are ignoring or not noticing your bodies first signals at the source, in this case possibly your neck, it sends the pain on down the line. So perhaps a trip to a massage therapist is in order.

Especially since you have no other symptoms.Gout is extremely painful and your toe would be swollen and red.You would be unable to walk without pain.
But since you say this happens when you are sitting I suspect the neck. Most of us are careless with our posture while sitting. Do a search on reflexology and see for yourself how every nerve ending runs to our hands and feet.
You may need an alignment from a chiropractor as well. They can do a very gentle adjustment without jerking your neck at all.

You could have gout which is a build up of uric acid in your body that settles into your joints, usually in your big toe. It may look kind of swollen and tender. If you're overweight and eat a lot of meat, shellfish or drink alcohol, it increases your risk. There's a blood test you can take to determine if that's the cause and medication to control it.

Could be gout. My hubby has this problem intermittantly. When his toe starts to hurt, he increases his water intake, decreases meat protein intake and starts taking "Black Cherry" concentrate tablets from the health food store. It generally subsides by the end of the day or at least within 24 hrs. This course of natural response was suggested by a physician to decrease the potential for needing prescription drugs.

There are two possibilities to your problem. You could have an ingrown toenail. That will cause the pain that you describe. The second is gout. What I recommend is that you see a Podiatrist as soon as possible and get evaluated. The doctor will be able to tell you what you have And give you proper treatment.

Toe numbness can be associated with poor circulation or low B12 levels. Perhaps you should check yours out.
