Isn't it immoral to translate 'Yaweh' as 'The Lord' when it's a proper name?

The Bible teaches us not to remove or add to the Bible under great penalty. Revelation 22:18, 19. It is also against lying and liars will lose everlasting life. Rev. 21:8, John 8:44.

Ancient Hebrew had no vowels at all. The vowels from all names were added in for clarity. It is no more wrong to do that, than it is to translate the Bible into English or other languages so we can know how to behave and what is true or not. Acts. 17:11, 1 Thess. 5:21.

That said, the Bible warns of bad consquences for those who forget God's name. Psalm 44:20, 21. Jesus and the apostles continueally mentioned how they named Christians after Jesus' Father. Acts. 15:14, John 17:6, 11, 26, John 5:43, 44 and many more. Revelation 16:9....having a hatred of God's name is indication we are not a righteous person.

Many Bibles such as the American Standard return God's name to the text most of the 7,000 plus times it was removed. It and countless others are available for free online use all over the internet.

YHVH is unpronounceable, and it's true meaning whether an anagram or something else has been lost. Some say it is an anagram of "I AM what I AM", the name that God told Moses. Older mystical traditions suggest that YHVH is the sound that people make when they breath.

When reading the Jewish Scriptures, Jews do not attempt to pronounce YHVH but instead substitute the name Adonai in it's place. Adonai means Lord. The name Yahweh is simply an attempt to pronounce YHVH and is incorrect linguistically. The common name Jehovah (not really a true transliteration of YHVH) comes from inserting the vowels from the name Adonai into YHVH. This was done in the Jewish Scripture to signal that Adonai was to spoken in place of YHVH.

The tetragrammaton YHWH or Yahweh is also read as "Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh" or "I am that I am". Ehyeh is from the root word that means "to be". Some are of the opinion that it was given in the future tense, meaning something like "I shall be that which I shall be". I don't think it's a name but a way to describe God's nature. All other references seem likewise descriptive.

'Yaweh' is not a proper name. The vowels were added by biblical scholars who misunderstood the original way that the Israelites, now Jews, referred to G-d. 'Giovanni' gives a good answer and it is almost totally correct :) We do call G-d 'Adonai' which means Lord.

Immoral how?
'The Lord' shows reverence to God. It was a title chosen by Jewish scribes who sought to keep God's name holy by not mentioning it. It is not immoral to call a Captain 'Captian' if he is. It is not immoral to refer to the President as 'the President'. For the Jewish Sages, who held God in the highest honor, actually saying the name, as you have done would be immoral, not to mention sacreligious.

Well it's a bit more complicated than that. Because YHWH is sacred, Jewish writings usually have "Adonai" superscribed, so that people could read out that instead of YHWH. And adonai means lord... so it does make some sense to translate YHWH as lord.

There was also the unspeakable name of God known as the tetragramatton, or "YHVH".

This is the name that Jesus called Himself in John 8:58 when He said, "I Am"
