One question - is it set for close up?

One answer - any rangefinder camera (non-SLR) has what is called parralax problems. You don't get what you see through the viewfinder because you aren't seeing the same angle as the lens. It get worse the closer you get.

One solution - best bet is to get a soft tape measure, take various shots at different distances. The one that is best is the one you should use for all future shots. Just use the tape measure or build a jig to hold the camera at the exact correct distance.
