OK lets us start with the fact your back problem is due to the job, therefore you need some help with how to pick up golf balls correctly, as in posture, as in bend the knees? Likewise you need to strengthen the back muscles, core muscles so try a Pilate's Class. In four months you will have the basics and once learned you will have the exercise forever.

If your pain is muscular, you might want to try ice instead of heat. If there is swelling, the heat will just make it swell more. Leave the ice on for 20 minutes at a time and make sure to place a towel between your skin and the ice bag.
If you plan to go back to your job again you might want to think about how you are bending. You could also purchase a grabber so you don't bend over at all. They are at most Walmart stores ($10) or drug stores (up to $29). I use one to pick up the sticks that fall in my yard from our huge trees. It's great help.

where is the back pain at? if it is in you lower area then you need to stretch out you hamstrings. sounds weird right? well, stretching your legs help out with most back pain. just try stretching for a few minutes, or even try doing yoga. it really helps out with all kinds of pain. good luck!
