It's illegal because the legal system takes into consideration the undue influence that an adult can have on a minor. He can drink legally, but she can't. Still if she felt pressured or urged by him, she may choose to drink, among other things. She is not even old enough to work or have a job, (accept for maybe babysitting) and she definetely would not be able to support herself if she was on her own. There was a period in time where a grown man could date a child, (and your 14 year old friend is indeed a child) and no one would bat an eye. However in this day and age, it is not just wrong it's illegal. If they have sex, he would go to jail for up to twenty years, and rightfully so. If she had any real parental guidance, she wouldn't be dating a 22 year old man. It's disgusting. If he were a real man, he'd be dating real women, and not a child who isn't fully developed physically, emotionally or mentally. She doesn't even have a decent education yet, for gods sake. He's gotta be a real loser.

What part of that don't you understand? It is illegal because in the eyes of the law the 14 year old is a minor-he can't even drive and that should be telling you something-after 18 your considered as a legal adult. The 22 year old is basically committing a federal crime, if a cop stops them somewhere and has a reason to believe they're having a relationship together-because maybe he/she saw them kiss, the older person will go jail for a long time. It's basically the same thing as the Mary K. Laterno (the teacher who had sex and a baby with her minor student). They have to be very careful out in public, but your friend should leave and the stupid 22 year old is stupid and sick for committing this atrocity and basically committing "consensual rape", if they had sex. Which for both parties, i hope it didn't happen.

The 22 year old is a legal adult and the 14 year old is still very much a minor. Being a minor, they do not have the maturity and knowledge (whether they think so or not) to make such decisions like dating an adult. Therefore, it is illegal for a minor under 17 to date someone 18 or older. It does vary from state to state.

It's not actually illegal for them to date as long as there is NO sexual contact. It is illegal because a 22 y/o has a lot more life experience, is an adult and is more likely to be taking advantage of a 14 year old girl than forming a long term relationship. Even though your friend may feel really grown up at 14, your friend still has a lot of emotional growth to experience before being able to handle a relationship with a full grown man. She should really be dating someone her own age!!

I think ( i am not 100% sure!) that because your friend is dating a 22 year old that because they are older than 18 he is classed as an adult and because your friend is under 18 they are classed as a minor/child so i think because they are under 18 that it is illegal. I am not 100% on this but i was in the same situation once! i just told my friend it was a bad idea and they could get into trouble.

what ridiculous, is by law , yes it is illegal because they consider the 13, 14 , whatever year old to young to know better. but they can begiven birth control without even letting the parents know. Condoms are passed out at schools. and if a girl, even at that age, wants an abortion, it is her right, adn once gain, the parents dont have to know. It is just one of the many stuipid flaws in our laws. but they need to be careful, because even if it is consentual, the government will do what they want with him, which is usually jail, no matter how unjust that is, it happens all the time.

Sodomy is often used to refer to anal sex, but it actually encompasses any kind of sex other than normal heterosexual vaginal intercourse. So oral sex is sodomy too, and so is any kind of homosexual sex. Many states still have laws against sodomy on the books. These laws, however, are mostly unenforceable. After the Supreme Court case of Lawrence v. Texas it is unconstitutional to criminally punish anyone for engaging in private consensual sex among adults. The only time you'll see sodomy crimes these days are when you have a rape or statutory rape law that increases the punishment when the sex involved was "unnatural" i.e. sodomy of some sort. Many states didn't enforce their sodomy laws even before Lawrence v. Texas, but never bothered to officially repeal them. Probably because nobody wants to be known as the sodomy senator.

Because anyone under 18 is not considered old enough to consent to sex with an adult. They aren't really aware enough to make those kinds of choices on their own. And frankly, a 22 yr old who wants to date a 14 yr old is nothing more than a sexual predator. That's sick.

The 14 yr old is not considered old enough to give consent and is a minor...the 22 yr old is an adult and it's considered inappropriate for an adult to date a minor because of the influence adults tend to have on kids. It's inappropriate until the 14 yr old is old enough and mature enough to make their own decisions based on knowledge and wisdom.

It's not illegal for a 14 year old and a 22 year old to date. Any sex would likely be felonious, but dating does not require sex.
