Ok, What I do when I'm looking to branch out a little (I'm a beginner too) is go to Bel Air or Raley's and pick up the free magazine Something Extra. They have tons of recipe ideas and most of their recipes work together so you can make a great new meal. I just hosted a dinner party using the recipes I got from Something Extra and everyone raved about how great the food was!!

Make a nice stew or soup. It's easy to make, and you will have a lot of leftovers. I like to make anything from the Moosewood Cookbooks, but AllRecipes.com is another great source for easy recipes.
Also, make some homemade garlic bread with it by softening some butter, roasting some garlic, and spreading these on Italian bread. Then, sprinkle some parm cheese on and broil until brown. Mmmm!

This is a simple italian beef recipe. Get a rump roast or bottom round roast. Put in crock pot and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. When it is tender pull apart. Pour juice out of crock pot. Put beef back in the crock pot and add 3/4 water and 1 package of dry italian dressing. Slice up green peppers and add to pot. Cook until green peppers are tender. Serve on buns with swiss cheese. It's very easy. You just have to plan it so you can start it mid morning.

I don't know if you like Beef stew or not but my husband loves it and I don't. There is a couple of different brands in the store of beef stew in a can. I fix mashed potatoes (instant) and put them in a casserole dish and pour in the beef stew and top it with cheese and bake in the oven until it is hot and the cheese has melted. I love to cook but some days I just don't, this is as easy as anything you can cook. In fact it is so easy I don't even call it cooking. My family loves it.

Since it's getting cooler outside, try something easy like this.Everyone I've ever made this for, loved it.
Firehouse chili (serves 4)
1Tbs olive oil
1 lg clove garlic,smashed
1/2 C chopped scallion (long green onions)
1/2 lb. of ground beef/turkey, or beef stew meat
2Tbs chili powder
1 can (15 oz.) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (28 oz.) crushed tomatoes
1 medium red bell pepper, diced
1 C carrots, diced
1/2 tsp brown sugar
salt to taste
In a large saucepan heat oil over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking. Toss in garlic and all but 2Tbs of the scallions and cook, stirring frequently, for 1 minute.
Add ground beef/turkey or beef stew meat and continue to cook until browned. Stir in chili powder and cook for a minute. Add tomatoes, kidney beans, bell pepper, carrot, brown sugar, and salt to taste. Bring to a boil over high heat.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 15-20 minutes.
You can serve this with warm bread of some sort. I like to make corn bread with it.
If you like it to be spicier, add a chopped up jalapeno.

I'm making crawfish & sausage gumbo tonight. It's very simple. Mix up some dark roux, a couple quarts of water and bring that to a boil. Add onions, peppers, celery, and other seasoning. When you get that to the right consistancy add your crawfish and sausage. When that cooks serve over rice. You can also add some boiled eggs into it if you like.Good luck. 2D
