Unfortunately, cancer rates for people that quit smoking do not decrease if the smoker had smoked for 4 years or more. The genetic damage to the lung cells has already happened, and the chances of getting cancer do not decrease with quitting. However, the chances of getting Emphysema or heart disease are greatly lowered.
