It means not to marry someone without waiting enough time to make sure it's the right decision, or don't do it. It doesn't mean wise men don't marry, it just means wise men wait to make the right decision. Both parts of a proverb are to be read and understood as a whole or a team.

Mostly agree. People should make their own decisions instead of just following the opinion of the crowd. However, a wise man does take into consideration the opinion of others when making decisions, its just that those public opinions aren't the primary basis. If there is an overwhelming majority opinion on an issue, that's definitely worth taking into account. Proverbs 17:12 Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool bent on folly.

I cannot consider myself wise but I would never marry (if ever).
Honest or cowardly men? This is a question about what the true meaning is...

You are assuming people get married for the right reasons and all marriages are honorable. They are not.

Many couples get married:

- For money
- For a Greenfcard
- For status
- Just to shut up parents
- Because she got knocked up
- Because they are lonely and insecure
- Because they think they MUST
- Because its the only way to have sex (for religious people)
- Because they need a woman to take care of them
- Because a corporate exectutive or politician is SUPPOSED to have a wife
- To prove they are not gay (even if they secretly are)

So that proverb really only applies to a select few who marry for the right reasons- They genuinely love and respect the person. They want to committ to that person for life. They want to build a loving home together, share and learn and grow together till death.

These days, judging from the high rate of divorce, few get married for the right reasons in the first place.

I'm an honest man who married early. Now that I'm divorced, I'm wise enough to never do it again.

...I wish I had been wise, instead of honest.

Honest men need someone to lie on their behalf, so they get married early so their wife can do the lying for them..

Wise men can bull sh*t their way out of any situations thus they do not need a wife
