Elevator? Probably powered by mules or oxes.
Destruction? Man abandoned the tower and eventually it was lost by earthquakes, effect of winds, maybe also by man needing the materials to construct another thing.

As a ziggurat, the Tower had stairs or ramps.
The ravages of Time, the elemental forces of nature and the predations of man destroyed the Tower since it was probably made of sun-dried bricks

They didn't calculate the natural frequency of the structure, and didn't understand sinusoidal forces caused by winds. The wind frequency was close to the natural frequency of the building so the structure was swaying at resonance, and quickly fell apart. Luckily today we understand this sort of thing and can place mass spring damper systems at the tops of our buildings to act as vibration absorbers.

The tower was not distroyed, they stop working on it. There was when God gave differents language to people, so they could not communicate and finish the tower. Haven't you seen altavista.com where the translator is called BabelFish? The believe come from there.
Update: That was when those people who could understand themself moved to live together.

When God confounded thier languages...........they stopped trhe building of it............and wondered away.........in confusion....thus the name Babel !!!!!!! and it had a pulley system so yeah guess you coud say it had a elevator of sorts !!!!!!!!! Robes........ladders.....walkways........landings.........etc etc
