I wen't to the dentist this morning and they took my full mouth x-rays and they told me that I need a root canal in my bottom # 26 which I believe is the k-9 tooth but I can't be sure because it doesn't hurt. And they said that there is no cavity but and absess at the very bottom of the root.

My question I guess is has anyone ever had this happen to them? or should I get a second opinion?

CRYSTAL,
#26 HAPPENS TO BE YOUR RIGHT LOWER LATERAL INCISOR, WHICH IS NEXT TO THE CANINE TOOTH, #27.
IF THEY SAW THAT THERE WAS AN ABSCESS ON THE X-RAY FILM IT MEANS THAT THE NERVE IN THIS TOOTH HAD LONG SINCE DIED - THAT'S WHY THERE IS NO PAIN.
SO, IF IT DOESN'T HURT WHY FIX IT?
BECAUSE THIS INFECTION MAY ALSO NEGATIVELY AFFECT THE TEETH NEXT TO THIS PARTICULAR TOOTH AND WHEN THE ABSCESS IS SEEN ON AN X-RAY THERE IS ALREADY BONE LOSS AND IF YOU DON'T GET THE ROOT CANAL YOU WILL EVENTUALLY LOSE THE TOOTH.
ps. someone said dentists don't like doing root canals, this is not always the case, they refer out to endodontists, who specialize in root canals.:-)

my cuz just found out she has to get a root canal because her tooth is just dead. no cavity just dead. an absess is an infection that normally needs to be drained, it's a build up of puss. considering where it's at, the doctor probebly can't drain it, and antibiotics probably won't help it. You can get a second oppinion if you want, but they'll probably tell you the same thing. Don't worry about a root canal, they don't really hurt (I had one last year on a molar), and after about 3 days you won't feel any pain unless you try to eat on it!

The way I count, #26 is the one in front of your k9 on the right side.

If it doesn't hurt you may ask to see the xray or get a second opinion.

It is possible, but I would get it double checked if you don't trust your dentist. Most dentists do not like doing root canals so they have nothing to gain by telling you that you need one if you don't. Also, that would open them up to law suits. Get it done before it hurts.

I will advise you to get a second opinion .Get an xray done and verify if the doctor said is truth.
Root canal has 50% failure rate and after that what is left is tooth extraction.

get another opinion. the tooth may be dead and you may not know it or the dentist needs to pay bills. either way another opinion is the best choice
