Dogs are pack animals. They cannot be left alone for long periods of time. They need exercise or they will become board and start chewing on everything.
They need to be trained. Training is done by repetition. Keep repeating what you want the dog to do, showing it over and over is how a dog will remember.
You groom yourself everyday so why would you not groom your dog? Make sure to keep it`s nails clipped.
Periodic vet checks are very important.
Feed a dog quailty food without overfeeding and make sure it has plenty of
fresh water.

Respect, patience and love. Exercise is crucial as is proper training. Without those two you can get a dog with some serious behavior issues. Proper vet care on a regular basis, GOOD NUTRITION, no commerical garbage food. Socialization is alsp very important to having a safe healthy dog.

Learn how dogs learn. Don't force a dog to do anything - the "Do what I say, or I'm going to hurt you" mentality won't do you a bit of good. Recognize that everything that you want to accomplish with a dog can be done with kindness, clarity, and the knowledge that's easily obtainable from so many sources.

Be sure to keep up with their heart-worm meds and tic and flea meds. It can get expensive but extremely worth it. You never know what they are getting into. Also, keep up with clipping its nails. If they get too long, they will get very uncomfortable (just be sure and don't cut the cuticle). And most importantly, LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

Be kind. Do not hover over the dog. Let it sniff you first. Give it a treat after you are done.

Become your dogs leader. If your dog doesn't respect you as his leader, every other aspect of his life will be difficult for you and him.
