The .17 HMR and the .22 WMR fire approximately the same amount of powder since the .17 HMR uses a necked-down .22 WMR cartridge case.

However, since the .17 HMR has a higher muzzle velocity (2550 ft/s +) compared to the .22 WMR (2000 ft/s +/-), the .17 HMR has a sharper "crack" as the bullet leaves the barrel. This would be a distinguishable difference in the sound comparison of the two bullets.
