NOT TOO MUCH WILL HAPPEN SINCE IT HAD STITCHES AND MOST OF THE HEALING HAS OCCURRED. YOU CAN USE A WATERPIK IRRIGATOR TO GENTLY BLAST AWAY FOOD DEBRIS AND KEEP THE AREA CLEAN.
YOU WILL BE FINE.

Rinse your mouth with a mixture of warm water (1 cup) and (1 tsp) salt. It should help dislodge the food stuck in your cavity left by the extraction. If left in there for too long it might get a little smelly, but it would have to be in there for a long time to cause an infection. Try using a Q-Tip to gently push the food out of the cavity and then rinse again. Do not use your fingers to dig. You could break the lining of the gum and introduce bacteria into the wound.

Small particles of food sticking inside a hole in your tooth are likely to provide food for bacteria to grow in. This is likely to worsen the situation with your existing cavity and if it is not filled you might find that the infection can get into the root of the tooth, the gum or even down as far as the bone of the jaw.

While waiting for your dental appointment you should maintain meticulous oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice per day and rinse carefully to wash as much debris out of the hole as possible. Rinse with a fluoridated mouth wash such as the Listerine Fluoride Rinse (check your Listerine to make sure it is the one with Fluoride and not the regular stuff).

Have a look at the wiki page. It's got a real good gross out picture of dental caries (a cavity). No wonder dentists have such a high suicide rate! :-P

It could cause an infection. Ask your Dr. for a syringe with a curved tip to help wash the tissue out and keep it clean. The mouthwash is ok but the doc will probably recommend warm salt water (aka saline) to help the gums heal quickly.

It can cause infection definitely. It needs to be irrigated, my oral surgeon gave me a syringe to put water in and squirt down into the hole and it flushed the food out. If he didn't give you one, I'd call the office and ask for one or ask them to flush it for you so you can keep it clean, if the hole starts to close with food in it, they'll have to cut it open to get it out, so definitely try flushing it out now with water!!

if the food remains in the hole for a oong period, it will cause bacteria to grow. keep using the listerine and ask your doc about fixing the problem

Your tooth will rot for sure! You should use dental floss from the beginning. But since the hole has been formed, you should pay a visit to a dentist to avoid harmful bacteria from worse damage.
