Statistically, 80% of Americans are christian, yet the national divorce rate is 50%. What does this say about the ever touted "sanctity of marriage" that is so sacred and cherished by the christian community?

Yes, marriage is sacred.

But people are sinners.

Just because marriages fail and people divorce doesn't make marriage the problem. Sinful and selfish people are the problem.

It says that they are screwing up their marriages. I am guessing it's because they have adopted many of the worldly ideals that cause divorce among nonchristians.

I know that, for me as a Christian, marriage is very important. I was married at 19 to my best friend in the world, and now we have 2 kids and are happier and closer than before we married. We have had our ups and downs, we've had some fights, we have had some difficult times to get through. We choose to work on our marriage when problems arise rather than getting all huffy and selfish and not talking things over. We don't believe that divorce is an option and I wouldn't want to do that anyways....when I said "until death do us part" I meant it. I plan on fighting for this marriage! It's too bad more Christians don't. They have no excuse for divorce....they are supposed to have the Holy Spirit to help them with these things! They shouldn't be failing. It's a tragedy that they are.

God made marriage a sacred institution. When people divorce it is not His fault and it doesn't change the holiness of the institution.

The solution is not to throw out marriage. We should seek to better prepare couples before they enter into this union, and to educate them about the importance of the sacrament.

As for this Catholic, I hold marriage to be sacred, as God does.

There are other ways of interpreting the data. Perhaps not all Christians are Christ followers. Or the institution of marriage as a metaphor of Jesus-His bride (the church) relationship, is under special attack of the enemy.

How many of those are "true" Christians and not just someone calling themselves such because they don't have any other group to fit in or they are trying to please their parents with that label when they don't agree with the tenets of Christianity, or whatever the case may be?

That said, it depends on the Christian. Most I have met feel marriage to be very sacred.

Strangely, the divorce rate is highest in the most Christian states! The highest being Kentucky, and the lowest divorce rate being Godless Massachusetts!.

The following verse is repeated TWICE in Matthew.

"But I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, excepting for the cause of fornication, maketh her to commit adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery."

I guess that's why most Christians skip Matthew and go straight to the Writings of John and Paul. They have more loopholes in their writing.

It's sacred to God, not necessarily Sacred to them. I still wonder how allowing homosexuals to marry would be an assault on the sancity of an institution when our society allows unscriptual divorces and many people, quite a few of them "Christians" violate the sancity of their marrige themselves.

After all, why let a loving homosexual couple marry? It'll destroy the sancity of that businessman's marriage as he cheats on his wife!
