You can try to get whatever pain relief he is happy to take
Paracetamol (Acetaminophen)
NSAIDs e.g. Ibuprofen - in some countries Ibuprofen is available as a cream or ointment you can rub into his back
Codeine
But it sounds to me like you guys would be best served if he would go and see a doctor about pain relief. (This would also enable you guys to make an inquiry about the possibility that the cancer has returned)

what kind of cancer? did the cancer spread? or did the treatment for his cancer cause the pain in back ( radiation seeds for prostate cancer can "eat" the back bones)
if the pain is so intense its "killing" him then no natural remedy is going to work he needs a doc and meds
good luck and god bless

I know you said he survived cancer, so he really needs to go get checked, cancer often returns unfortunately...and this recently happened to a friend of ours. When cancer returns it often starts in the bones, I think he needs to have a bone scan just to make certain with his past medical history.....I hope he is fine, I HATE CANCER....and for all those voting prop. 15 needs to pass to get the research dollars for this horrific group of diseases that will effect over 500,000 American's each year!

He needs to see a doctor. They could probably give him a pain medication which would make him feel a whole lot better.

That's a typical bodily response to having your body subjected to radiation, it causes mass mutation and the cancer comes back like gangbusters. I hope it's not too late. Please see my post for natural references in this forum under the "what is the cure for breast cancer?" thread.

until you know what's causing the pain, i'd stay away from rubbing it. i don't know much about natural pain remedies but some kind of anti inflamitory would work best.
