We have free dental treatment and a free national health service in the UK, whereas there are currentley 40 million Americans living without any medical insurance. Surely that must mean they have much worse teeth? Maybe the English had bad teeth 200 years ago?

i was wondering where the bad teeth thing comes in, i am 35 and don't even have a filling, they're white, perfectly straight etc. very strange views of our teeth they have over there. I guess it's from the movies and tv which is where their views of the outside world seem to come from!

we did have bad teeth years ago because of hygeine, social conditions and bad diets, but america was barely even settled then anyway, their ancestors probably were living in london with bad teeth too!

Most of us do not have free dental service. Where there is an NHS dentist in your area, the treatment is only free for pregnant women and children I think. Otherwise charges are quite high with often no free access to orthodontists.
I'll bet out of the 40 million Americans without insurance some have bad, no, uneven, not-so-whitwe teeth.
Some people are just lucky with their gnashers too.

This is an old stereotypical view..
The American people have ,to a great extent, tradionally always had good teeth
as they tended to be more affluent financially and invested more in cosmetic dentistry etc.

The UK,Ireland and the rest of europe now spend more or less the same per capita....

The americans have a job to move forward in life.Europe was using teeth from dead soldiers from the battle of Waterloo to make dentures. This was because soldiers died young and their teeth were fairly good and remained popular for years after the war

Yes that is funny and probably an old joke from before the NHS era, because I live in Northern Ireland and grew up with the NHS and people here make fun of Southern Irish peoples teeth because they have no public Health Service and therefore don't have great teeth.

because we tend not to all have the same Hollywood style veneers and crowns, preferring instead to keep our natural teeth natural!to the white teeth obsessed Americans(whoa!sweeping generalisation there!),natural, untreated teeth would look horrid.remember when ronan keating(boyzone fame)tried to make it big in the US? they wouldn't touch him with a cattle prod until he'd had his teeth capped???? vain, vain, vain. there are also fewer cosmetic dentists in Britain.we have more restorative dentists here even though it is not as lucrative as the cosmetic side of things. good old Blighty tho, eh?we would be well and truly stuffed without a free NHS. I couldn't afford it even though i work for it.

It's a generalization which is untrue (as most generalizations are). Same as the way people say that Americans are fat.

Because the American's buy fake teeth. My American friend spent $3000 on veneers when there was nothing wrong with her original teeth. Crazyness.

Because we're jealous. Think about all the fillings we get and all the food we eat.
