I can't remember why cats purr- its because of something in their throat that vibrates. Cats purr when they're feeling pleasure, but also when they're in pain- as a way of dealing with it, and a calming influence to themselves. Mother cats purr when in labour. They're in pain, and probably frightened but they cannot talk, cannot be talked to or comforted, so they purr to themselves.
I think lions do purr, but only on the out breath, not both in and out like domestic cats.
'Meow' is just what comes out when then try and 'talk'! Just like if we had never learnt words, we'd probably grunt and make silly noises.

I read a few weeks ago that a cats purr also helps them in terms of health - if a cat has been run over, or is otherwise gravely ill, it will often purr, even if it is in a lot of pain. Some scientists now think that the the frequencies of the purr may have a good effect on healing, and may even speed it up, whilst increasing bone density! Clever things, cats!

Cats purr because they're happy or comforted. Cats meow because that's the way they speak. And I'm pretty sure that lions purr (for the same reason as cats).

Cats can purr for several different reasons. Sometimes, rarely, a cat will purr when it is sick. But for the most part, cats will purr because they are happy, and comfortable. Or because they are feeling affectionate :)
Some people say lions purr, some people say they do not. They make a sound that sounds like purring, but it's not for the same reason a house cat does.

Hi cats purr for a number of reasons one of which is a comforter to themselves when they are in pain. But generally it is considered as a contented sound.
I once heard a lion purr at london zoo, it was so weird.
